Prof. Dr. Carriquiry Lecour, Born in Montevideo (Uruguay), has worked in the service of the Holy See for the past 40 years. In May 2011, he was appointed by Benedict XVI to Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America (and is also the first layman to occupy this level of responsibility to the Holy See). In May 2014, Pope Francis assigned him as "Secretary in charge of the Vice-Presidency" of the Commission. Among much of his involvement, he has participated as an expert in five General Assemblies of the World Synod of Bishops (on evangelization in the modern world, about family, about the laity, the Church in America, on the new evangelization), was a member of Holy See delegations to numerous global conferences of the United Nations, and has collaborated in the preparation of various papal travel in Latin America. Additionally, he has received, among others, the highest papal honor ("Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Gregory the Great") and decorations from Italy, Argentina and Chile.
