Bishop Jean Laffitte is secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family, which is the Vatican organization responsible for organizing the World Meeting of Families. He has also served as vice president of the Pontifical Academy for Life. He was born in France. He studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and at the Pontifical Institute John Paul II, where earned a doctorate in moral theology.Subsequently he taught ethics and the spirituality of marriage and family at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. In 2003 John Paul II appointed him consultant of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and then under-secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family. In 2006 Benedict XVI appointed him vice president of the Pontifical Academy for Life and, in 2009, secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family. He was ordained a priest in 1989 and a bishop in 2009. He is the author of numerous publications, including, most recently, “The Choice of the Family.”
