Archbishop Auza was born in Talibon, Republic of the Philippines, and was ordained a priest in 1985. He earned a doctorate in Theology and entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1990. He served at the Apostolic Nunciatures in Madagascar, Bulgaria, and Albania,
 before being assigned to work in the Secretariat of State of the Vatican and then in the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York. In 2008, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti and helped in the multinational efforts to help the country rebuild after the 2010 earthquake. He was appointed Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the Organization of American States in July 2014.
